2027 Elections: Gov. Yusuf Charges Lawyers to Safeguard Democracy
Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has called on lawyers to uphold the rule of law and play an active role in ensuring peaceful, free, fair and credible elections ahead of the 2027 general polls.
Governor Yusuf made the call on Thursday while declaring open the Second Annual Summit of the Arewa Young Lawyers’ Forum at the Amani Event Centre in Kano.
Speaking at the event, the governor said legal practitioners occupy a strategic position in protecting the integrity of Nigeria’s justice system, particularly during pre-election and post-election disputes, stressing that their commitment to justice is essential to strengthening democracy and public confidence in the electoral process.
He described young lawyers as indispensable to the survival of democracy, the protection of citizens’ rights and the advancement of the rule of law, noting that they serve as a bridge between the current challenges facing the legal system and the future of the profession.
Governor Yusuf said his administration has continued to support the legal profession through the recruitment of more than 70 young lawyers into the Kano State Civil Service, the distribution of over 100 laptop computers to young lawyers, prompt payment of furniture and robe allowances, and sustained capacity-building and professional development programmes for legal officers.
He added that the state government has also introduced institutional reforms and promoted Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms to enhance access to justice and improve the efficiency of the justice delivery system.
The governor commended the leadership of the Arewa Young Lawyers’ Forum, under Umar A. Chiroma, for organising the summit, expressing confidence that the gathering would promote meaningful engagement and contribute to the continued growth of the legal profession across Northern Nigeria.
