Gada Biyu, Yaryasa Bridges: Doguwa Secures House Resolution for Immediate Federal Intervention

 

The House of Representatives has unanimously adopted a motion sponsored by the member representing Doguwa/Tudunwada Federal Constituency, Hon. Alhassan Ado Doguwa, calling on the Federal Government to immediately reconstruct the collapsed Gada Biyu and Yaryasa bridges along the Kano–Jos Federal Highway.

 

The motion, presented as a matter of urgent public importance by the former House Majority Leader during plenary, received overwhelming support from lawmakers and was adopted through a voice vote presided over by the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

 

Leading the debate, Doguwa described the reconstruction of the two bridges as an urgent national priority, warning that their continued collapse poses serious risks to lives, economic activities and interstate transportation.

 

He explained that Gada Biyu Bridge, located at the entrance to the Palgore Game Reserve in Doguwa Local Government Area, and Yaryasa Bridge in Tudunwada Local Government Area are strategic federal infrastructure linking Kano State with Plateau, Kaduna, Nasarawa and Benue states.

 

According to him, the bridges were constructed during the administration of General Yakubu Gowon in the early 1970s and have served as critical transportation corridors for over five decades, facilitating the movement of people, agricultural produce, goods and services across northern Nigeria and beyond.

 

Doguwa noted that the structural integrity of the bridges had deteriorated over the years due to ageing infrastructure, increasing traffic volumes and the impact of recurring heavy rainfall.

 

He recalled that the last major rehabilitation of the bridges was carried out during the administration of late General Sani Abacha through the Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF).

 

The lawmaker informed the House that Gada Biyu Bridge collapsed in February 2026, while Yaryasa Bridge suffered a complete collapse in June 2026, disrupting economic activities, restricting the movement of persons and goods, and isolating several communities within and beyond Kano State.

 

He warned that the continued deterioration of the bridges threatens national food supply chains, interstate commerce, rural livelihoods and the safety of thousands of Nigerians who rely on the Kano–Jos Federal Highway.

 

“The timely reconstruction of these bridges will restore economic activities, improve road safety, facilitate interstate commerce, enhance agricultural productivity and promote rural and national development,” Doguwa said while urging the House to accord the motion urgent consideration.

 

The motion was seconded by Hon. Chike Jonathan, who described it as timely and deserving of the full support of the House.

 

Following its adoption, the House resolved to urge the Federal Ministry of Works to immediately commence the reconstruction of Gada Biyu and Yaryasa bridges.

 

Lawmakers also called on the ministry to provide temporary access measures, including suitable diversion routes or emergency crossings, to ease the hardship currently experienced by commuters pending the completion of the reconstruction works.

 

The House further mandated its Committee on Works to conduct an oversight visit to the affected bridges to assess the extent of the damage and engage the Federal Ministry of Works on a clear implementation timeline.

 

It also directed the House Committee on Legislative Compliance to monitor the implementation of the resolution and report back within six legislative weeks for further legislative action.

 

The resolution is expected to accelerate federal intervention on the two critical bridges, whose collapse has severely disrupted transportation, trade and socio-economic activities along one of the country’s most strategic highway corridors.
