Gov. Yusuf Urges States to Replicate Kano’s Special Reporters Initiative

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has called on state governments across Nigeria to adopt Kano’s Special Reporters Initiative, describing it as a pioneering model for strengthening government communication, enhancing public enlightenment and promoting inclusive development.
The governor made the call while addressing participants at the Arewa Media Summit in Kano, where he highlighted the importance of effective communication in deepening democracy and improving governance.
His remarks were contained in a statement issued on Monday by the Director General, Media and Publicity, Government House, Kano, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.
Governor Yusuf disclosed that Kano is the first state in the country to establish the positions of Senior Special Reporters and Special Reporters, an initiative designed to bridge the communication gap between government and the people.
According to him, the programme currently engages more than 150 young men and women, who have been deployed across ministries, departments, agencies (MDAs) and the 44 local government areas of the state.
The governor explained that the Special Reporters are tasked with documenting and publicising the developmental projects and achievements of both the Federal Government and the Kano State Government, while also educating citizens on government policies, programmes and initiatives.
He noted that the initiative has significantly improved the dissemination of government information, strengthened public participation in governance and created meaningful employment opportunities for young people.
Governor Yusuf described effective communication as a critical pillar of good governance, stressing that timely, accurate and credible information helps build public confidence, promotes transparency and encourages citizens to actively participate in the democratic process.
He therefore urged other state governments to establish similar communication structures to improve access to reliable information, foster stronger engagement between government and citizens and support sustainable national development.
The governor reaffirmed the commitment of the Kano State Government to implementing policies and programmes that promote responsible communication, transparency, accountability and inclusive governance.
He expressed confidence that wider adoption of the initiative across the country would enhance public trust in government institutions, improve policy awareness and strengthen democratic governance through informed citizen participation.
The Arewa Media Summit brought together journalists, broadcasters, digital content creators, academics, communication experts and policymakers to deliberate on the role of the media and strategic communication in advancing good governance and national development.
