INEC Urges Citizens to Seize Voter Registration Opportunity
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Sokoto State is rallying traditional, religious, and community leaders to mobilize citizens for the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, which commenced on August 18, 2025. The call to action aims to enhance democratic participation and ensure that every eligible Nigerian has a voice in the electoral process.
Resident Electoral Commissioner Umar Yusuf Garba emphasized the critical role of voter registration in fortifying Nigeria’s democracy. “This exercise is not just a formality; it is a fundamental right and a civic duty that strengthens our democratic system,” he stated during a press briefing.
The CVR is designed to broaden voter access and simplify the registration process across the nation. Eligible participants include new voters aged 18 and above who have never registered, as well as those wishing to transfer their voting rights to a different polling unit or ward. Additionally, citizens who have lost or damaged their Permanent Voter Cards can also take advantage of this opportunity to register or update their information.
Garba highlighted that while online registration is currently available, manual registration will commence in September 2025 at all local government areas and the state headquarters of INEC. The CVR exercise is set to continue until August 30, 2026, providing ample time for citizens to ensure their participation in future elections.
“We are committed to making this process accessible, inclusive, and transparent,” Garba assured. However, he cautioned against multiple registrations, which are strictly prohibited under electoral guidelines.
As the deadline approaches, the commission urges all eligible citizens to take action and register, reinforcing the message that every vote counts in shaping the future of Nigeria.
