BUK Launches Probe into Alleged Online Impersonation, Financial Misconduct by Student

The management of Bayero University Kano (BUK) has commenced an investigation into allegations circulating on social media and in public commentary linking a person reported to be a student of the institution to acts of online impersonation and financial misconduct.

The university disclosed this in a press statement issued by its Director of Public Affairs, Lamara Garba, on behalf of the Registrar.

According to the statement, the university became aware of the allegations following widespread discussions online that accused the individual—said to be affiliated with the institution—of engaging in activities involving impersonation and questionable financial dealings on digital platforms.

BUK management stressed that the university maintains strict standards of discipline, conduct and character for all students throughout the period of their academic programmes, noting that any action capable of tarnishing the institution’s image is treated with utmost seriousness.

The statement emphasised that the personal conduct of any individual student does not in any way represent the values, principles or reputation of the university as an institution.

“In view of the allegations, the University has commenced a preliminary inquiry to ascertain the facts surrounding the matter,” the statement said.

It further explained that the appropriate authorities within the university are already reviewing the issue in accordance with the institution’s established disciplinary procedures governing students’ behaviour.

The management also used the opportunity to commend the efforts of renowned Nigerian professor and columnist, Farooq Kperogi, as well as other well-meaning individuals who regularly provide financial support to students by assisting with registration fees and other educational expenses.

According to the university, such acts of generosity contribute significantly to expanding access to education and supporting students who might otherwise struggle to continue their studies.

BUK reassured members of the public that if the ongoing investigation confirms the allegations, appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken in line with the university’s regulations and applicable laws.

The university also urged the public to allow the investigative process to run its full course and avoid spreading unverified information or engaging in speculation that could prejudice the inquiry.

The management reiterated its commitment to upholding integrity, discipline and accountability within the university community while safeguarding the reputation of the institution.
