Kano, GIZ Partner to Promote Energy Efficiency in Public Buildings
The Kano State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing energy-efficient practices across public buildings in the state. This assurance was given by the Commissioner for Power and Renewable Energy, Dr. Gaddafi Sani Shehu, at a one-day sensitization workshop on Energy Efficiency in Public Buildings held at BON Hotel, Lafia Road, Kano.
The workshop was organized by GIZ German Development Partners in collaboration with the State Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy. Dr. Shehu said the initiative seeks to create awareness and encourage sustainable energy use to reduce power consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
He noted that Kano has recorded significant progress in renewable energy deployment, citing the installation of solar-powered streetlights and increased adoption of clean energy alternatives. According to him, promoting energy efficiency in public infrastructure remains a key strategy for conserving energy and protecting the environment.
Participants were encouraged to intensify public sensitization efforts to reduce energy waste and adopt best practices in building design, maintenance, and power management.
Speaking at the event, Energy Adviser Mr. Odima Okodi Iyaha highlighted the objectives of the Partnership for Energy Efficiency in Buildings (PEEB), a global initiative focused on climate-resilient and efficient building systems. She stressed the importance of integrating energy-efficient principles in construction and facility management.
Also presenting, energy consultant Dr. Manassah Babale Shitta underscored the role of energy conservation in enhancing national energy security and reducing environmental impacts. He discussed key measures such as efficient lighting, cooling systems, insulation, and the use of solar power.
Ahmad Tijjani Ahmad of the Energy Commission of Nigeria delivered a paper on the relevance of energy audits, emphasizing their role in improving performance and minimizing wastage in public buildings.
In his closing remarks, Acting Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Engineer Ismail Ibrahim Muhammad, commended GIZ and participants for their contributions, calling for continued capacity building to achieve long-term energy sustainability goals.
Academics, engineers, architects, and other stakeholders participated in discussions during the workshop.
