Kano APC Chairman Calls for Calm Over NERC Appointment Controversy
The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State, Alhaji Abdullahi Abbas, has appealed for restraint among party members amid rising tensions over the confirmation of Engineer Abdullahi Garba Ramat as Executive Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).
In a statement personally signed by him, Alhaji Abbas cautioned party supporters against making inflammatory remarks or engaging in actions that could trigger internal divisions within the APC in the state.
The controversy, which has drawn comments from supporters aligned with the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, and those backing the APC gubernatorial candidate, Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, and his running mate, Hon. Murtala Sule Garo, has led to accusations and counter-accusations within party circles.
Alhaji Abbas reminded members that appointments into national offices are guided by the Constitution. He stressed that while the Presidency has the authority to nominate individuals for federal appointments, the Senate reserves the power to screen and confirm such nominees.
“This matter is clearly within the constitutional mandates of the Presidency and the Senate,” he said. “We must avoid statements and actions that undermine the unity of our party. APC in Kano has always been one strong political family, and we must not allow a single issue to divide us.”
He urged party members to respect due process, remain patient, and trust the relevant national institutions to discharge their responsibilities fairly and in the interest of the country.
Alhaji Abbas expressed confidence that the Presidency and the National Assembly would handle the development appropriately and urged supporters of all leaders involved to prioritize peace, cooperation, and party cohesion.
