‎Sources indicate that some highly placed figures within the Federal Government, including the Senate President, are allegedly behind the move to halt the outcome of the polls.

‎Despite the pressure, INEC on Saturday night declared Dr. Ali Alasan of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) winner of the Bagwai / Shanono  rerun and returned elected, defeating the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) with a decisive margin.

‎

‎Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf was said to have stormed INEC headquarters in Kano shortly after the announcement, while the Kwankwasiyya movement directed its members to mobilize in large numbers to the commission’s office to ensure that the people’s mandate is protected.

‎

‎Observers who monitored the rerun exercise described it as largely peaceful and credible, with a massive turnout of voters across the affected constituencies.

‎

‎However, the mounting pressure on INEC has triggered widespread concern about the independence of the commission and the possible consequences of political interference in the democratic process.

‎As of press time, INEC has not responded to the allegations of external pressure, but all eyes remain on the commission to protect the sanctity of the ballot and uphold the people’s choice.
