The Presidency has issued a stern warning against the illegal mounting of 2027 campaign billboards across major cities in Nigeria, describing the act as a breach of electoral laws.
In a statement released on Sunday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the Federal Government expressed displeasure over the appearance of campaign materials promoting President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima for the 2027 elections.
The statement noted that such billboards—spotted in Abuja, Kano, and other locations—feature images of the President, his wife, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, and the Vice President, despite the absence of an approved campaign timetable by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Daily Gazette reports that some of the billboards in the Nigerian capital have signatures that show that they were sponsored by support groups loyal to the president.
The Presidency emphasised that the Electoral Act strictly prohibits any form of political campaigning before INEC officially lifts the ban. It warned that premature campaigns could distort the electoral process and create undue advantages.
