Northern Peace Campaign Urges Nigerians to Embrace Community Service for National Stability
The leadership of the 2026 Northern Nigeria Peace Campaign has called for renewed commitment to community service as a strategic pathway to strengthening peace, unity, and sustainable development across the country.
The call was made in Abuja following a series of high-level engagements with key stakeholders, where the Campaign Chairman, Ambassador Zubairu Dalhatu Malami, underscored the crucial role of volunteerism and grassroots initiatives in tackling insecurity, youth vulnerability, and social disintegration.
Ambassador Malami described community service as more than an act of goodwill, stressing that it is a collective responsibility capable of fostering trust and strengthening social bonds within communities. According to him, active participation in community development efforts equips societies with the resilience needed to confront violence, unemployment, and marginalization.
“When communities take ownership of their development through service, they build resilience against violence, unemployment, and marginalization. Community service is the heartbeat of peace,” he stated.
The campaign noted that community-driven initiatives such as volunteer programmes, youth mentorship, environmental sanitation efforts, and grassroots empowerment schemes have proven effective in addressing social challenges and promoting peaceful coexistence. It emphasized that such initiatives not only enhance community well-being but also strengthen national unity.
The Peace Campaign further urged Nigerians to regard community service as a civic obligation that aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 16 and 17, which promote peace, justice, strong institutions, and strategic partnerships.
As part of its ongoing activities, the campaign announced plans to organize community clean-up exercises across selected states, youth mentorship programmes facilitated by trained volunteers, and women empowerment workshops supported by grassroots networks. Additional initiatives will include Early Warning and Early Response (EWER) sensitization sessions in collaboration with traditional institutions aimed at strengthening local conflict prevention mechanisms.
The 2026 Northern Nigeria Peace Campaign is being implemented through partnerships with the Africa Peace Reform Initiative (APRI), Global Peace Chain, AUDA-NEPAD Nigeria, Zamkah Technologies Limited, and the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR).
The campaign leadership called on government agencies, non-governmental organizations, philanthropists, corporate bodies, and citizens to actively support community service initiatives, noting that collective participation remains essential to achieving long-term peace and national progress.
Observers believe that sustained community engagement and inclusive partnerships could play a critical role in stabilizing vulnerable communities and promoting lasting peace across Northern Nigeria and the country at large.
