Key Commissioners Stand Firm as Kano Government Dismisses Defection Rumours
Waiya says strategic ministries remain loyal as Governor Yusuf retains firm grip on governance
The Kano State Government has strongly dismissed reports suggesting that recent political defections have weakened the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, describing such claims as misleading, mischievous and deliberately designed to distort the facts.
In a press statement issued on Thursday, January 29, 2026, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, reaffirmed that commissioners heading the most critical and strategic ministries of government remain firmly aligned with the governor.
According to the statement, governance is neither speculative nor driven by propaganda, stressing that the real measure of political control lies in the command of institutions that formulate policy, manage resources and implement development programmes.
“The facts are clear and settled,” Waiya stated. “The commissioners in charge of the most powerful and strategic ministries of government remain firmly with His Excellency, the Governor. Anyone suggesting otherwise is either uninformed or intentionally misleading the public.”
The commissioner listed key ministries that remain under the governor’s leadership to include Education, Health, Works, Finance and Economic Planning, Planning and Budget, Information and Internal Affairs, Justice, Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Agriculture, Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change, Transport, Power and Renewable Energy, Housing Development, Rural and Community Development, as well as Procurement and Monitoring.
He described these portfolios as the “true levers of government” and the centres where authority is exercised, decisions are taken and policies are translated into action.
Waiya emphasized that political movements or public commentary do not amount to a loss of power, noting that governance remains stable when the core institutions of government are intact and functional.
“Power is not lost when key institutions remain intact. Control is not lost when the engine rooms of government are stable. Governance is not disrupted by political movements,” the statement read.
He further noted that the Kano State Government continues to function effectively, with policies being formulated and implemented, projects progressing across sectors, the bureaucracy aligned with executive direction and the cabinet operating as the highest policy-making body of the state.
The commissioner cautioned critics against confusing media headlines with actual authority, stressing that while political drama may excite commentators, governance responds to structure, legality and institutional control.
Reaffirming the resolve of the administration, Waiya declared that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf remains fully in charge and is governing “effectively and strategically,” adding that the administration will not be distracted, weakened or compelled to negotiate its mandate.
He urged detractors to accept the political reality and engage in more constructive public discourse, insisting that the foundations of governance in Kano State remain solidly under the governor’s control.
