Kano Commissioner Resigns, Cites Ideological Drift in Yusuf Administration

A member of the Kano State Executive Council, Dr. Yusuf Ibrahim Kofarmata, has resigned his appointment as Commissioner, citing what he described as a departure of the present administration from the political ideology that brought it to power.
In a resignation statement dated 25 January 2026 (6th Sha’aban 1447 AH), Dr. Kofarmata said his decision was taken in good faith, stressing that he could no longer continue to serve in a government that, in his view, had derailed from its founding principles.
“I hereby resign my appointment as the Commissioner and Member of the Kano State Executive Council. I took this decision in good faith, as I cannot continue to work under a government that derailed from the ideology that brought it to power,” he stated.
Despite the resignation, the former commissioner expressed gratitude to key political actors and supporters who contributed to the emergence and early successes of the administration. He specifically thanked the national leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Engr. Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Kano State Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, and the people of Kano State.
Dr. Kofarmata, who served in the Ministry of Higher Education as well as the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, said he was thankful for the opportunity to serve the people of Kano and to contribute to policy implementation and public service delivery during his tenure.
In a parallel message delivered in Hausa, the former commissioner reaffirmed that his resignation was informed by a deviation from the political philosophy upon which the government was formed. He acknowledged the support he received from political leaders, colleagues, and citizens throughout his period in office, describing his service as a privilege and an act of devotion to Kano State.
He concluded his statement with prayers and goodwill for the NNPP and the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Kano State, and the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The resignation adds to growing political developments within Kano State, amid ongoing debates over governance direction, party cohesion, and ideological consistency within the ruling NNPP-led administration.
