The Governing Council of Bayero University, Kano (BUK), has approved the appointment of Professor Haruna Musa, a Fellow of the Security Institute (fsi), as the 12th Vice-Chancellor of the university. The appointment, which takes effect from August 18, 2025, is for a single term of five years.
According to a letter signed by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, the Governing Council considered the recommendations of the Selection Board and approved Professor Musa’s appointment.
Professor Musa, a renowned chemist and academic administrator, has had a distinguished career at BUK. Born on June 20, 1967, in Dambatta, Kano State, he obtained his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Bristol, United Kingdom, in 2009.
With over three decades of experience in academia, Professor Musa has supervised numerous undergraduate and postgraduate projects, published scholarly articles, and presented conference papers in several countries. He has also led major research projects, including a ₦36 million National Research Fund grant for the development of an electrically rechargeable zinc-air battery.
As Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), Professor Musa has demonstrated exceptional leadership and administrative skills. He has chaired several strategic committees, including the Senate Business Committee and the University Admissions Committee.
Professor Musa is a Fellow of several professional bodies, including the Security Institute, Institute of Chartered Chemists of Nigeria, and Polymer Institute of Nigeria. He has received multiple honors for his research excellence and contributions to academia.
The university community has welcomed Professor Musa’s appointment, expressing optimism about his ability to lead the institution to greater heights. The outgoing Vice-Chancellor’s tenure ends on August 17, 2025, and Professor Musa is expected to take over the reins of the university on August 18, 2025.
