NAHCON Seals 2026 Hajj Airlift Pact, Warns Airlines on Timelines and Standards
The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has formally signed the 2026 Hajj Airlift Agreement, charging participating airlines to strictly comply with operational standards and timelines ahead of the forthcoming pilgrimage.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, NAHCON Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Ismail Abba Yusuf, described the agreement as a major milestone in preparations for the 2026 Hajj. He stressed that the airlift operation remains a critical component of the pilgrimage and must be executed with professionalism, precision, and commitment.
While commending the airlines for their past performances, the Chairman emphasized that adherence to the terms of the agreement is non-negotiable. He noted that Hajj operations are strictly time-bound and require seamless coordination to ensure Nigerian pilgrims are transported to and from the Saudi Arabia within approved timelines.
Ambassador Abba disclosed that the agreement contains clear compliance mechanisms, including recovery timelines for airlines that fall behind schedule and contingency arrangements to prevent disruptions. He assured stakeholders that NAHCON would fully exercise its oversight mandate to safeguard the interests of pilgrims.
According to him, airlines that perform creditably will continue to enjoy the Commission’s confidence, while those that fail to meet agreed standards or timelines will face sanctions in line with the provisions of the agreement. He reiterated that the welfare and convenience of Nigerian pilgrims remain NAHCON’s top priority.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Operations, Inspectorate and Licensing, Anofiu Elegushi, said the agreement reflects strengthened collaboration and a shared commitment to service excellence. He noted that lessons from the 2025 Hajj airlift exercise would inform improvements for the 2026 operations.
Prince Elegushi added that punctuality, operational efficiency, adequate aircraft deployment, and effective management of logistical challenges are essential to the success of the exercise.
On behalf of the participating airlines, Barrister Shehu Wada, Executive Director and representative of Max Air, expressed appreciation to NAHCON for the confidence reposed in the carriers. He described the Hajj airlift as a national assignment and assured the Commission of the airlines’ commitment to safety, punctuality, and strict adherence to agreed schedules.
The ceremony concluded with the formal signing of the agreement, reinforcing NAHCON’s resolve, in partnership with the airlines, to deliver a smooth and efficient 2026 Hajj airlift operation.
