Independent Hisbah Plan Withdrawn After Public Outcry, Stakeholders’ Intervention in Kano
Plans to establish an independent Hisbah group in Kano State have been formally withdrawn and suspended following widespread public criticism and high-level stakeholder intervention, according to Alhaji Baffa Babba Dan Agundi.
In a press release dated December 16, 2025, Dan Agundi announced that the move to create the independent Hisbah body was shelved after a crucial stakeholders’ meeting held at the Tinubu Campaign Office on Tuesday. The meeting reportedly brought together representatives from all 44 local government areas of the state.
The statement explained that the decision followed intense public outcry that greeted the proposed establishment of the group, as well as interventions by key stakeholders, including the Kano State Government, the Department of State Services (DSS), and former Kano State Governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje. These interventions, the statement noted, were aimed at preserving peace and stability in the state.
According to Dan Agundi, the meeting resolved to suspend the establishment of the proposed Independent Hisbah Fisabilillah to give the Kano State Government room to address the concerns surrounding the initiative through dialogue and amicable engagement.
“The stakeholders agreed that the suspension would allow the government to carefully look into the issues raised and ensure that any action taken aligns with the interest of peace, unity, and lawful governance in Kano State,” the statement said.
It further stressed that participants at the meeting reaffirmed their commitment to respecting constituted authority and resolved to cooperate fully with security agencies to maintain law and order, as well as ensure the safety of residents in Kano State and Nigeria at large.
The development comes amid heightened sensitivity around security and religious enforcement structures in the state, with observers viewing the suspension as a move to de-escalate tensions and promote inclusive dialogue.
