REA, BUK Launch 6MW Solar Hybrid Upgrade to Boost Campus Power Reliability

Bayero University, Kano, has taken a major step toward strengthening energy reliability on its campus with the groundbreaking of the upgraded Solar Hybrid Mini-Grid Power Plant, which will increase capacity from 3.5MW to 6MW.
The ceremony, held during the 2nd International Conference on Renewable and Sustainable Energy Systems (ICRSES), brought together key stakeholders in Nigeria’s renewable energy ecosystem, including top officials of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA).
Speaking at the event, the Executive Director, Technical Services, REA, Engr. Umar Abdullahi Umar, delivered a detailed technical presentation outlining the significance of the project. He reaffirmed the Agency’s commitment to supporting institutions that embrace clean and sustainable energy solutions.
The Managing Director/CEO of REA, Engr. Abba Aliyu Abubakar, led the Agency’s delegation and commended Bayero University for championing renewable energy as a strategic tool for enhanced academic productivity and reduced reliance on fossil-based electricity sources.
The conference was organized by the Centre for Renewable Energy and Sustainability Transition (CREST) and brought together researchers, policymakers, and industry professionals to discuss emerging trends and innovations in renewable energy systems.
According to REA, the expanded solar hybrid facility will offer a more stable, cleaner, and cost-effective power supply, significantly improving learning, research, and campus operations.
With the upgrade now underway, Bayero University strengthens its position as a national leader in sustainability and renewable energy adoption.
