Federal Government Orders Immediate Closure of 47 Unity Schools Over Security Threats

Abuja, Nigeria — In a startling move, the Federal Government has announced the immediate closure of 47 Unity Colleges across the country, citing escalating security challenges. According to a statement from the Ministry of Education, the decision was made after a series of threat assessments by security agencies that deemed the schools vulnerable to attacks.

The affected institutions will remain shut “until further notice,” the ministry said, while enhanced security measures are put in place. Parents and students have been urged to stay calm as the government works to safeguard lives and restore normal operations.

Education analysts warn that the closure could deepen existing strains on the already overburdened public education system, particularly in the Unity Colleges, many of which struggle with dilapidated infrastructure.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government has allocated N40 billion to improve security across Unity Schools — with N20 billion for perimeter fencing and an additional N20 billion to provide solar-powered electricity to counter erratic power supply.

Further details on how students will be accommodated or relocated during the closure have not yet been provided.
