World Cup Qualifier Thriller: Nigeria, South Africa End First Half 1-1 in Bloemfontein
Nigeria’s Super Eagles and South Africa’s Bafana Bafana went into halftime deadlocked at 1-1 in their fiercely contested FIFA World Cup qualifier at the Free State Stadium, Bloemfontein, on Tuesday.
The clash lived up to its billing from the onset as the hosts pressed aggressively, forcing the Nigerian backline into early defensive duties. Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali was called upon to make a crucial save, denying South Africa’s Nkota after a swift counterattack.
The tension rose in the 18th minute when South Africa’s Ngezana and Nigeria’s Ademola Lookman both picked up yellow cards following a heated challenge. Moments later, Nigeria suffered a blow as Ola Aina was forced off with a hamstring injury, prompting Bright Osayi-Samuel’s early introduction.
Bafana Bafana capitalized on their momentum in the 24th minute. A clever pass from Mokoena released Nkota down the flank, and his dangerous delivery into the box was inadvertently turned into his own net by Super Eagles’ captain William Troost-Ekong, handing the hosts a 1-0 lead.
Nigeria, however, found their equalizer before the break. Lookman combined well with Moses Simon, whose precise cross was met by defender Calvin Bassey. His powerful header rippled the net, though there were muted protests from the South African players over a suspected handball in the buildup. With no Video Assistant Referee (VAR) in operation, the goal stood.
