Jibrin Kofa Bows Out of NNPP After Expulsion, Vows to Chart New Political Path
The political landscape in Kano State witnessed a fresh twist on Wednesday following the announcement by Hon. Abdulmumin Jibrin Kofa, member representing Kiru/Bebeji Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, that his membership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has come to an end.
In an official statement personally signed and released on Wednesday, Jibrin described his expulsion from the party as a “surprise and rude shock,” lamenting that his removal came without fair hearing or adherence to due process.
The lawmaker, who is also the Jarman Bebeji, said his recent media interviews in Hausa and English should not have warranted such a “heavy penalty,” stressing that the views he expressed were in line with the founding principles of the NNPP, which encourage dissenting opinions.
“I strongly believe the contents of the interview I granted a few days ago should not warrant such a heavy penalty. No invitation was extended to me to defend or explain myself by any organ of the party. Even under military dictatorship, an accused is subjected to a court martial,” he said.
Jibrin, who has been a prominent figure in the NNPP since its recent resurgence, emphasized that while he would have loved to remain in the party to continue serving Nigerians, the decision of the party must be respected.
“But for the respect I have for the party, its members and leaders, I would have viewed this action as null and void as it failed to follow due process. I will rather wish the party well and go in peace. I beg the party to allow me also go in peace,” he added.
On allegations of non-payment of party dues, Jibrin dismissed insinuations of deliberate refusal, insisting he remains ready to settle any outstanding obligations once properly invoiced. He appealed for maturity and restraint as he and the party part ways.
“The party does not believe anybody has political value and falls short in treating people with the respect they deserve. I am grateful to the Almighty for whatever value I have, no matter how little, and will be glad to invest it where it will be appreciated,” Jibrin stated.
While expressing gratitude to his supporters and reiterating his contributions to the NNPP, Jibrin declared that he bears no grudges against those who choose to remain in the party. He assured that political affiliation would not affect his personal relationships with colleagues across levels.
The federal lawmaker, however, hinted at a possible realignment in the near future, noting that he will “carefully weigh all options” before announcing his next political home.
“Finally, I will carefully weigh all the options before me as I decide on my next political home. So help me God,” the statement concluded.
Jibrin’s exit marks another significant development in the NNPP, which has been grappling with internal rifts and factional disputes in Kano and across Nigeria. His next move will be closely watched as political parties begin to reposition ahead of future elections.
