The recent groundbreaking political initiative popularly known as the “Abba Gida-Gida Councillorsโ Project” championed by His Excellency Governor Abba K Yusuf in April 2025, has significantly reshaped the development landscape of Kano State. This bold and unprecedented step marks the first of its kind in Nigeria, based on available findings.
Despite various political and administrative pressures, the Governor made a courageous and people-oriented decision by approving constituency projects for all 484 ward councillors across the 44 Local Government Areas of Kano State. Each councillor was given the opportunity to identify and present renovation and development needs within their wards. These include the rehabilitation of schools, healthcare centers, boreholes, and other critical community-focused projects that directly impact the lives of citizens.
This initiative has created visible and measurable progress at the grassroots. Projects that were once mere dreams in local communities are now becoming a reality. From classroom renovations, primary health care hospitals renovations to functional water systems, development is now reaching the people where they live.
Remarkably, this transformation is happening just two months after the official flag-off of the program. The speed and scale of implementation are commendable, setting a new standard for participatory governance and grassroots development in Nigeria.
This project clearly demonstrates that the government truly cares about the ordinary people. Councillors now feel more responsible and connected to their communities because they are directly involved in the development process. The initiative is also creating jobs for local builders, plumbers, electricians, and other skilled workers, thereby boosting the local economy. Parents are happy because their children can now learn in improved classrooms, while many communities are gradually gaining access to clean water, courtesy of the boreholes being repaired and newly drilled across the state. If this kind of project continues, every village in Kano will truly feel the presence and impact of the government.
More initiatives are already underway, and this is just halfway into the tenure of the administration. I pray that Allah grants His Excellency the strength and courage to continue implementing people-oriented development projects across the state.
