2027 Running Mate Row: Senator Barau Jibrin Slams Brakes on Supporters’ Clamour, Urges Focus on Tinubu’s Agenda

Senator Barau I. Jibrin, Deputy President of the Senate, has distanced himself from calls by some northern groups, including the Northern Nigeria Progressive Youth Assembly (NNPYA), urging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to pick him as his running mate in the 2027 presidential election.

In a statement released on Monday, June 24, 2025, Senator Barau’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ismail Mudashir, said the senator wants the groups to halt their clamour and instead focus on supporting President Tinubu’s administration.

According to Senator Barau, the timing of the clamour is “out of place” and not in their best interest. He urged his supporters to channel their energies and resources towards supporting President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

“If you are truly my supporters, please desist from this unnecessary clamour and join the train to restore the glorious days of our country under the able leadership of President Tinubu.” This is not the time to engage in this kind of clamour. What should be paramount to all of us at this moment is the success of the President.” He said

The senator reiterated his commitment to the administration’s success and urged all Nigerians to team up with President Tinubu to transform the country.

Senator Barau’s statement is likely to calm the waters and refocus attention on President Tinubu’s agenda. As the 2027 presidential election approaches, the identity of the president’s running mate will be closely watched.
