A potentially catastrophic incident was averted on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, along the BUK-Gwarzo Road in Kano when a petrol tanker fully loaded with Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) lost balance after one of its rear tyres fell into a roadside drainage. The incident, which occurred at approximately 1:45 pm near the NYSC Secretariat Junction, posed a significant risk of explosion and fire outbreak in the densely populated area.
Upon receiving the distress call, operatives of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Kano Sector Command promptly arrived at the scene, joined by personnel from the Federal Fire Service, Nigerian Red Cross Society, and the Kano Road Traffic Agency (KAROTA). The rescue team quickly cordoned off the area, diverted traffic, and ensured the safety of lives and properties in the vicinity.
The firefighters from the Federal Fire Service took necessary precautions to prevent any fire outbreak while the delicate process of offloading the PMS from the unstable truck was carried out successfully. Thanks to the combined efforts of all the emergency response agencies, the potential disaster was averted, the obstruction was cleared, and normal traffic flow was restored on the affected route
The Sector Commander, CC MB Bature, commended the gallant and timely intervention of all the emergency response agencies. He also appealed to petroleum product drivers and owners of filling stations to ensure that proper entry and parking mechanisms are in place to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
The FRSC Kano Sector Command reiterated its commitment to ensuring road safety and called on all stakeholders and the motoring public to remain vigilant and cooperative in times of emergencies.
