Plateau governor vows loyalty to PDP, says only God and the people can decide his political future
Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has revealed that he is under intense pressure from political stakeholders to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking on Saturday at an event held at the Banquet Hall of the Government House, Jos, Governor Mutfwang said that while several influential figures have urged him to switch parties, he has no intention of leaving the PDP.
“It is not a lie that they also put pressure on me. But I told them only two people would authorise me to change my party — one is the God of heaven, and the other is you, the people,” Mutfwang said.
The governor, who is expected to seek re-election in 2027, reaffirmed his commitment to the PDP, stressing that his loyalty lies with the people who entrusted him with their mandate.
Turning to the cheering crowd, he asked: “Have you asked me to go anywhere?” The audience responded with a resounding “No!”, drawing applause and chants of solidarity from supporters.
His comments come amid widespread speculation about his political future following reports of overtures from APC leaders seeking to woo him into the ruling party.
Just weeks earlier, APC stakeholders in Plateau State publicly distanced themselves from claims that Governor Mutfwang was in talks to join their fold. At a stakeholders’ meeting in Jos, party members unanimously rejected a motion suggesting his possible admission into the APC.
Political analysts say the pressure on Mutfwang reflects the high-stakes political maneuvering ahead of the 2027 elections, as both the PDP and APC jostle for control of Plateau — a strategic swing state in Nigeria’s Middle Belt region.
Despite the mounting pressure, the governor’s latest remarks appear to reaffirm his unwavering stance and resolve to remain within the PDP, at least for now.
