Kwankwaso Quits NNPP, Triggers Major Political Shake-Up Ahead of 2027

Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, former Governor of Kano State and presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, has formally resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party, in a move widely seen as a major development in Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 polls.
In a press statement dated March 29, 2026, Kwankwaso announced that his resignation takes immediate effect, citing the need for “strategic realignment” in response to the evolving dynamics of national politics.
The former NNPP National Leader described the decision as a difficult one, noting that his commitment to the party over time made the move particularly challenging.
“As a committed and bonafide member of the party, this was not an easy decision to make,” he stated.
Kwankwaso, who flew the party’s flag in the 2023 presidential election, expressed deep appreciation to the leadership and members of the party across all levels for their support during his time in the NNPP.
He specifically thanked the National Chairman, Ajuji Ahmed, the National Working Committee, Board of Trustees, National Executive Committee, as well as party structures from ward to state levels for their dedication and loyalty.
He also acknowledged members of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, commending their steadfast commitment to the party’s ideals and vision.
Reason Behind the Exit
Explaining his decision, Kwankwaso said the current trajectory of Nigeria’s political environment necessitates aligning with a platform that offers a stronger opportunity to deliver meaningful change.
“I have found it necessary to identify with another political platform that offers the best opportunity to effectively change the nation,” he said.
He stressed that his resignation should be seen as a strategic step rather than a withdrawal from active political engagement.
Implications for 2027 Elections
Political analysts believe Kwankwaso’s exit could trigger a wave of realignments, particularly in Northern Nigeria where he commands significant grassroots support.
His next political move is expected to influence alliances and power blocs ahead of the 2027 general elections, potentially reshaping the contest among major political parties.
