2027 Polls: Gov. Yusuf Directs Political Appointees to Resign Before March 31 Deadline
Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has directed all political appointees intending to contest elective positions in the 2027 general elections to resign from their current offices in line with provisions of the Electoral Act.
The directive was made public in a press statement issued on Wednesday by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa. The statement explained that the decision is aimed at ensuring strict compliance with electoral regulations and promoting transparency ahead of the polls.
According to the statement, the order was formally communicated through an official circular released by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Farouk Ibrahim. The circular emphasized the need for public office holders seeking elective positions to disengage from government duties to avoid conflicts of interest and maintain neutrality in the political process.
The government cited Section 88 (1) of the Electoral Act 2026, which regulates the participation of public officials in partisan political activities. It noted that the directive is intended to strengthen accountability and integrity within the public service while guaranteeing a level playing field for all aspirants preparing for the 2027 elections.
Political appointees who wish to contest have therefore been given until Tuesday, March 31, 2026, to resign or retire from service, as applicable.
All Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) have also been instructed to give the circular wide publicity and ensure full compliance.
The development is seen as an early move to shape the political landscape in Kano State as preparations gradually gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections.
