Tinubu Gives Deadline: Political Appointees Must Resign by March 31 to Contest 2027 Elections
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed all political appointees under his administration who intend to contest elective positions in the 2027 general elections to resign from their offices on or before March 31, 2026.
The directive affects a wide range of officials, including ministers, ministers of state, special advisers, senior special assistants, special assistants, personal assistants, directors-general, and chief executive officers of federal government parastatals, agencies, commissions, and government-owned companies. Other political appointees serving at the pleasure of the president are also expected to comply with the order.
The decision was communicated through a circular issued by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation. According to the circular, the move is aimed at ensuring strict compliance with the provisions of Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, which mandates political office holders seeking elective positions to step down ahead of party primaries.
The directive also aligns with the timetable earlier released by the Independent National Electoral Commission for the conduct of party primaries in preparation for the 2027 general elections.
Political analysts say the development is expected to trigger a wave of resignations within the federal cabinet and other government institutions, as several appointees are believed to be nursing ambitions to contest governorship, National Assembly, and other elective offices across the country.
Observers further note that the early resignation deadline could help reduce the misuse of public office for political advantage, while creating a more level playing field for aspirants ahead of the crucial electoral season.
