2027 Countdown: INEC to Unveil Revised Election Timetable After Electoral Act Review
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced plans to review the Electoral Act 2026 and subsequently release a revised timetable for the 2027 general elections.
The commission said the move is aimed at ensuring full compliance with the provisions of the newly enacted law as preparations gradually intensify for the next electoral cycle.
Speaking in an interview with Sunday PUNCH, the Chief Press Secretary and Media Adviser to the INEC Chairman, Mr. Adedayo Oketola, confirmed that the commission was already working on adjustments that would align its schedule with the legal framework governing the 2027 polls.
Oketola explained that the review became necessary in light of the requirements outlined in the Electoral Act 2026, noting that INEC remains committed to operating strictly within the law.
He disclosed that a “revised timetable” would be released, although he did not specify the exact date for its unveiling.
“We are committed to abiding by the laws of the land,” he said, stressing that the commission’s actions would reflect its statutory responsibilities.
INEC’s clarification comes amid growing calls from some political parties urging the electoral body to make public a detailed roadmap for the 2027 elections. The parties argue that early release of the timetable would allow for adequate planning, internal primaries, and strategic mobilization.
The electoral body, however, maintained that it would follow due process and ensure that all timelines comply with legal stipulations.
