Singer Market Fire: Gov. Yusuf Donates N100m to Victims, Approves N3bn Road Expansion
Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has donated N100 million as relief support to traders affected by the recent fire outbreak at Singer Market, while also approving N3 billion for the expansion and rehabilitation of major road networks within the market environment.
The governor made the announcement during a sympathy visit to the market, where he met with traders whose shops and goods were destroyed by the devastating fire incident. The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Thursday by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.
During the visit, Governor Yusuf expressed deep sympathy over the losses suffered by the victims and assured them of his administration’s unwavering commitment to supporting their recovery and safeguarding their means of livelihood.
As part of immediate intervention efforts, the governor announced the donation of N100 million to cushion the impact of the disaster on affected traders. He emphasised that the gesture reflects the state government’s concern for the welfare of citizens, particularly small and medium-scale business operators who form the backbone of Kano’s commercial activities.
The governor was received by the Chairman of Singer Market, Barrister Junaidu Muhammad Zakari, alongside market elder Alhaji Sabi’u Bako and the owner of the affected plaza, Alhaji Munzali Mazaf, among other stakeholders.
Beyond the relief assistance, Governor Yusuf directed the immediate expansion and rehabilitation of road networks within Singer Market to improve accessibility and facilitate smooth commercial operations. He approved the award of N3 billion contracts for the expansion and rehabilitation of Bello Road, Ado Bayero Road, Kandoki, Yolawa and Kwangiri roads.
According to the governor, the road projects are designed to reduce flooding risks, ease traffic congestion and improve overall infrastructure within the market environment, which serves as a major commercial hub in Kano.
In further efforts to modernise the market, Governor Yusuf also pledged to introduce solar-powered electricity to enhance security and business activities, particularly during evening hours. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transforming Kano markets in line with his broader vision of urban renewal and economic growth.
The governor directed contractors handling the road projects to mobilise to the sites and commence work within ten days, stressing the importance of timely execution to minimise disruption to business activities.
In their response, the leadership and elders of Singer Market expressed appreciation to the governor for his visit and intervention, describing the donation and infrastructure projects as timely and compassionate.
They also commended the Kano State Government for its continued efforts to support traders and improve infrastructure across major markets, including Kantin Kwari Market and other commercial centres in the state.
