NBA Petitions Police Over Kwankwaso’s Alleged Claims of Judicial Interference in 2019 Kano Governorship Dispute
The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has resolved to petition the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies over alleged claims suggesting interference with the judicial process in the 2019 Kano State governorship election cases, reportedly linked to former Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
The decision was reached following deliberations by the association’s top decision-making body over remarks allegedly made by Kwankwaso, in which he reportedly claimed involvement in engagements with Supreme Court justices during litigation arising from the controversial 2019 governorship election in Kano State.
According to the NBA, such statements, whether made directly or implied, have the potential to erode public trust in the independence and credibility of Nigeria’s judiciary, particularly in matters relating to electoral adjudication.
The Council stressed that its planned petition is not targeted solely at the former Kano governor but will extend to any individual found to have made comments or claims indicating undue influence or inappropriate access to judicial officers.
In a statement issued after its meeting, the NBA clarified that the action does not amount to a presumption of wrongdoing. Rather, the association said it is seeking a comprehensive and impartial investigation to ascertain the authenticity of the claims and ensure accountability where necessary.
The legal body warned that unsubstantiated claims of judicial interference are capable of undermining democratic institutions, while genuine cases of improper conduct must be addressed decisively in accordance with the law.
Consequently, the NEC mandated the NBA National Executive Committee to formally submit a petition to relevant security agencies, including the police, urging them to conduct a thorough probe into the allegations.
The association emphasized that the move is part of its broader commitment to protecting the sanctity of the judiciary and reinforcing public confidence in Nigeria’s justice system, particularly in electoral dispute resolution processes.
