Emir of Kano Approves Appointment of Alhaji Ibrahim “Kilishi” as Madakin Galadiman Kano
The Emir of Kano, His Highness Khalifa Muhammadu Sanusi II, PhD, CON, has approved the appointment of Alhaji Ibrahim (popularly known as Kilishi) as the new Madakin Galadiman Kano, a prestigious traditional title within the Kano Emirate.
Alhaji Ibrahim Kilishi is the youngest son of the late Galadiman Kano, Alhaji Tijjani Hashim, a respected figure in the Emirate’s traditional and administrative history. His appointment followed a formal recommendation by the serving Galadiman Kano, in line with long-standing customs of the Kano Emirate, and was subsequently ratified by the Emir himself.
The title of Madakin Galadiman Kano holds a unique and highly revered position in the Emirate hierarchy. Unlike district heads, the Madakin Galadiman is a non-district traditional title holder, turbaned directly by the Galadiman Kano. Despite not presiding over a district, the Madakin Galadiman is accorded the rare privilege of sitting at the Emir’s palace alongside senior and influential members of the Emirate Council, reflecting the title’s historical weight and ceremonial importance.
Traditionally, the position of Madakin Galadiman Kano is reserved for a Prince (Dansarki)—a royal who is not appointed as a district head or substantive councilor—thereby underscoring its role as a symbol of royal trust, heritage, and continuity within the Kano Emirate.
The appointment of Alhaji Ibrahim Kilishi is widely seen as a reaffirmation of tradition, lineage, and service, as well as a recognition of his family’s enduring contribution to the stability and prestige of the Kano Emirate. It further reflects the Emirate’s commitment to preserving its time-honoured institutions while ensuring capable hands uphold its legacy.
The turbaning ceremony is expected to be announced in due course, drawing traditional leaders, dignitaries, and well-wishers from across Kano State and beyond.
