Kano Reunites Its Thrones: Governor Yusuf Inaugurates Historic Council of Emirs
In a landmark move that restores a centuries-old tradition, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf on Monday inaugurated the reconstituted Kano Council of Emirs, reinstating Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II as Chairman alongside the Emirs of Gaya, Rano, and Karaye.
The ceremony, held at the Coronation Hall of the Kano Government House, followed the governor’s recent signing of the Kano Emirates Council Law (Repeal Bill) 2024, which abolishes the five-emirate structure created under former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje. The new law effectively reunifies the Kano Emirate under one central council, a system that endured for more than 700 years.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, Governor Yusuf described the inauguration as a decisive step toward strengthening traditional governance and restoring the cultural architecture that has long bound Kano people together.
“Our traditional institution remains a pillar of history, a guardian of our values, and an engine of social stability,” the governor said. “The inauguration of the Council of Emirs today reaffirms our commitment to preserving Kano’s cultural legacy and deepening the partnership between government and the Emirates.”
Governor Yusuf emphasized that the Council is designed as a central forum for the Emirs to deliberate and offer strategic guidance on issues affecting the welfare, security, and development of the state.
Deputy Governor Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo expressed confidence that the Council would play a pivotal role in advancing peace and progress across Kano’s 44 local government areas.
Earlier, the Special Adviser on Chieftaincy Affairs, Professor Tijjani Muhammad Naniya, delivered a historical overview tracing Kano’s monarchical evolution and its longstanding ties with Rano, Gaya, and Karaye. He noted that the governor’s action restores a unified emirate system that predates colonial reorganization.
According to him, “What we are witnessing today is the revival of over 700 years of history when Kano Emirs stood united under a single leadership for the collective good of the people.”
Responding on behalf of the Emirs, Chairman of the Council and Emir of Kano, Khalifa Muhammadu Sanusi II, hailed the governor for what he described as a timely and historically consistent reform. He praised Governor Yusuf’s “monumental achievements” and pledged the cooperation and dedication of the Emirs to the continued development of Kano State.
