Abdulsalami to Trump: Support Nigeria’s Fight Against Insecurity, Not Issue Threats
Abuja, Nigeria — Former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd.), has called on former United States President Donald Trump to support Nigeria in addressing its security challenges rather than making statements that could further divide the nation.
Abdulsalami’s comment comes in response to Trump’s recent decision to redesignate Nigeria as a “country of particular concern (CPC)” over alleged persecution of Christians.
In a statement on Saturday, the elder statesman described Trump’s remarks as “a grave threat to Nigeria’s hard-won unity”, urging caution and constructive engagement instead of external condemnation.
“Unity, wisdom, and diplomacy must take precedence over division and pride at this critical moment,” Abdulsalami said.
He stressed that Nigeria’s sovereignty must be respected, adding that the country’s security challenges affect all citizens regardless of religion or ethnicity.
Abdulsalami also urged the Nigerian government to engage in strategic dialogue with the U.S. to address concerns and de-escalate the situation, noting that partnership, not pressure, is the way forward.
“This is the time for unity among Nigerians in the face of external threats,” he added.
