In a significant leap towards modernizing agriculture, the Kano State Agro-pastoral Development Project (KSADP) has sealed a $12.3 million deal with the Sasakawa Africa Association (SAA) to procure essential agricultural machinery. The amended Memorandum of Understanding, amounting to $12,347,071.44, aims to enhance mechanization and strengthen food security in the region.
The ambitious contract will provide an array of equipment, including tractors, combined harvesters, and specialized tools necessary for land preparation, planting, harvesting, and processing. State Project Coordinator Ibrahim Garba Muhammad emphasized that the initiative also includes solar-powered water pumping machines, rice milling equipment, onion storage technology, and advanced land preparation tools.
“This agreement supports the Kano State government’s push to transition from traditional farming practices to mechanized agriculture, ultimately boosting productivity for smallholder farmers and reducing post-harvest losses,” said Muhammad. The KSADP project is backed by the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), the Lives and Livelihoods Fund, and the Kano State government, and seeks to align with broader economic recovery and growth strategies.
Dr. Danjuma Mahmoud, the State Commissioner of Agriculture, hailed the initiative as pivotal in modernizing agriculture and making it more appealing to the youth. He noted that the collaboration represents a crucial step in the agricultural transformation drive.
In a statement, Dr. Godwin Atser, Country Director of SAA-Nigeria, characterized the agreement as a milestone in the state’s agricultural journey, highlighting five years of successful partnership with KSADP. This collaborative effort marks a promising future for agriculture in Kano State, paving the way for increased productivity and reduced poverty.
