Residents of Bechi in Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State are up in arms over an alleged attempt by unknown individuals to grab land belonging to a Girls’ Secondary School. The land was donated in 2014 by the community during the tenure of former Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso for the construction of the school.
The Bechi Community Development Association has appealed to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to intervene and stop the land grabbers. According to the association, the Kano State Ministry of Education had approved the construction of a classroom on the land, and work had even begun before it was abruptly stopped.
The Parents and Students Committee of the Girls’ Primary and Secondary Schools in Bechi has also weighed in, appealing to the authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the halted construction project. The committee chairman, Comrade Adamu Bechi, expressed concern that the lack of access to education for girls in the area is a major challenge, with even village heads attending the school.
The community is urging the Kano State government to look into the situation and ensure that female education in the area is not compromised. They have requested that the government complete the construction of the Girls’ Secondary School and protect the land from land grabbers.
