Kano State governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has announced a significant increase in the state’s minimum pension, raising it from N5,000 to N20,000 as part of efforts to improve the welfare of retired workers.
Speaking at the 12th Quadrennial National Delegates Conference of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) held at the Kano Government House, the governor-represented by Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo-revealed that over N16 billion in pension arrears had been cleared within less than two years, bringing relief to thousands of retirees.
He outlined key reforms including prompt monthly pension payments, elimination of arbitrary deductions, and resolution of long-standing property disputes involving the Pension Fund Trustees.
The proceeds from the sale of disputed properties, he said, had been remitted to the trustees.
Also speaking at the event, Niger State governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, commended pensioners for their service and pledged sweeping reforms, including plans to establish “NUP Farms” as part of post-retirement empowerment and food security initiatives.
In solidarity, Bago announced a N100 million donation from Niger State to support the conference, matching the contribution made by Kano State.
